Louis F. Neuweiler was a German immigrant who moved from Philadelphia to Allentown in 1891, taking over a brewery there, which he then named Lous F. Neuweiler & Son Brewery.
Neuweiler beers were regional bestsellers until the brewery closed in 1968.
Apparently, at that time, the company Girmscheid in Höhr-Grenzhausen produced a hunting animal series for the Neuweiler Brewery. Judging by the style, these mugs must have been made around 1965.
We have been able to secure production samples in a stockpile. The mugs are fully decorated and equipped with pewter lids. The individual editions were limited to 5,000 pieces.
The Hubertus themed stein was probably the first edition in this series:
The deer with a cross is a variation of the Hubertus symbol (actually, it is a white deer with a glowing cross in the middle of its antlers). Saint Hubertus (657-705) is still considered the patron saint of hunters today.
The series consists of:
Hubertus Theme
White-Tailed-Deer
Moose
Mountain Goat
Grizzly and
Elk
The steins for sale are special because they do NOT have an individual number, as they were intended as specifications for production and not for sale.
The height of the drinking rim and the base differ slightly.. Each stein was hand-jiggered and finished by different employees after being removed from the mold.
There are some differences in the ornaments or slightly in the height of the pewter lids. Perhaps a conscious switch to a different model was made during the series, or the focus was solely on the steins‘ motifs, neglecting consistency in lid designs.
