Beer Steins – Then and Now

First things first: there is no more classic way to enjoy a beer than from a stein.
German beer steins are world-famous, unique, and rooted in a long tradition. Originally, the stein served the “liquid bread” not only as a drinking vessel. After being cooled in a stream or an underground cellar, it was filled at a pharmacy or directly at the brewery and then taken along to work. The ceramic stein kept the beer cool and fresh for a long time. Back then, beer was not only a thirst quencher but also a source of energy. Later, lids were added to protect the contents from dust and insects. Over time, the steins became known far beyond national borders and were increasingly decorated with individual and elaborate designs. During the Age of Discovery, steins traveled in the luggage of settlers to new worlds. Every stein made by KING-Werk is dedicated to a specific theme and thus represents a timeless testimony of its era. Handmade with great care, they are not only suitable as decorative pieces or collectibles: just as in the past, the beer stein still stands for rustic and authentic beer enjoyment. As demand grew, the production of steins in the so-called “Kannenbäckerland” developed into an important industry in the Westerwald region. The area offered abundant clay reserves as well as the necessary firewood for the ceramic kilns.

Tradition and Modernity at KING-Werk

Today, stein production at KING-Werk combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Relief motifs and ornaments are still modeled and applied by hand. The production of the stein body as well as the various decoration steps are also carried out manually. Each stein is fired twice. During the first firing at approximately 1,100 °C, the material becomes compact and solid. The second firing permanently bonds the painting and ceramic decals to the surface. Today, only materials that comply with current food safety regulations are used. Modern equipment and kilns also ensure the highest quality and an environmentally friendly manufacturing process.
