Yes, there has been attempt to Imitate this kind of stein and get it made in China.
The easiest way to figure out if it is of German origin or not is to look through the stein down to its bottom:
Our Trick Steins have a so-called "Lithophane Picture" in the bottom. This is NOT a decal but it results simply out of the mould of the base: Due to different thicknesses of the clay, a motif appears… and, as in the old days, the theme is something what had to be hidden at those times..
What doesn't require someone "to look into it" are the distinctive holes built in the stein... Someone may wonder how to drink out of it without spilling the precious "liquid bread".
As many things in life - if you know it, it's simple:If yo hold the stein in your left hand, then cover the syphon hole beneath the handle and suck on the first hole along the rim.
The award for emptying the mug successfully is the pretty girl in the bottom of the stein. When looking "through" the stein, try to hold it agains a light which is as bright as possible. The brighter the light, the better the detail...
